COMING SOON: A Kickstarter Campaign

A Quiet Place to Rest, Recover & Simply Be

This is not just a lodging project.

It’s what happens when the lessons of a grandmother named Belle meet the realities of modern life.

My grandmother, Eula Belle Damren, never owned an inn. She cleaned houses for a living. She cooked on a wood stove. She hauled water from a spring because her home had no running water. There was an outhouse out back. She canned vegetables, made pickles, baked the most amazing biscuits and molasses cookies, and somehow always found room for family.

She sewed our clothes, including matching dresses for her grandchildren. She kept buttons in a pewter teapot instead of using it for tea. She read Winnie-the-Pooh and Heidi to me from books I still have today. Her home wasn’t fancy. By today’s standards, it lacked almost every modern convenience.

Yet when I think about the most comfortable place I have ever known, I think about Belle’s house.

After my father died when I was nine years old, my grandmother became one of the most important people in my life. She gave me something every child needs and every adult still longs for: the feeling that they matter. Her home was a place where I felt safe, welcome, and cared for.

Decades later, I found myself searching for that same feeling while traveling.

Living with PTSD, chronic migraines, post-concussion symptoms, and neurovisual challenges has taught me how exhausting travel can be. Bright lights, noise, uncomfortable furniture, poor sleep, confusing layouts, and constant stimulation can turn even a short trip into an overwhelming experience.

I began asking myself a simple question: Why do so many places offer luxury, yet so few offer comfort?

That question became the inspiration for Belle Inn & Studios.

Located in Durant, Iowa, Belle Inn & Studios is being designed as a restorative lodging experience for people who need more than a place to stay. It’s for travelers seeking peace and quiet. For caregivers. For medical travelers. For traveling professionals. For people recovering from burnout, illness, injury, or life’s unexpected challenges.

Every decision is guided by The Quiet Comfort Standard™—a framework built around sensory comfort, physical comfort, cognitive comfort, emotional comfort, and restorative comfort.

Our goal isn’t to create the fanciest place to stay.

Our goal is to create a place where people can finally exhale.

The $45,000 Phase 1 Kickstarter campaign will help transform the first four guest studios into welcoming, comfortable spaces while funding furnishings, sensory-friendly upgrades, accessibility features, common-area improvements, and the foundational elements needed to open our doors.

When you support this project, you’re helping build more than rooms.

You’re helping build a place where comfort comes first.

A place inspired by a woman who had very little, yet somehow made everyone feel like they belonged.

A place where peace and quiet still matter.

A place called Belle.

Help Build Belle Inn & Studios

It Takes a Community to Create Comfort

Belle Inn & Studios is more than a lodging business. It is a dream inspired by my grandmother, Grammie Belle, who taught me that comfort is created through simple acts of care—a warm meal, a handmade quilt, a good book, a rocking chair, and a place where people feel welcome.

Our mission is to create a restorative lodging experience for travelers, caregivers, medical travelers, veterans, people living with chronic illness, neurodivergent guests, and anyone who simply needs a place to rest.

As we work to transform a former commercial building in Durant, Iowa into a place of calm, quiet, and belonging, many people have asked how they can help.

While financial support is always appreciated, there are many other ways to contribute. Donations of furnishings, books, artwork, supplies, and skilled labor will help us create a warm and welcoming environment while preserving resources for accessibility improvements and guest comfort features.

Donation Guidelines

Donations are accepted by appointment only.

Please contact us before dropping off any items. This helps us ensure we have space available, confirm the item is needed, and arrange a convenient time for inspection and delivery.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept unannounced drop-offs.

Photos are appreciated for larger items such as furniture, artwork, décor, and appliances.

Large furniture donations must be pre-approved and accompanied by photos and dimensions.

All donated items are subject to inspection upon arrival and may be declined if they do not meet current needs, safety standards, or condition requirements.

Belle Inn & Studios is a for-profit organization. Donations are voluntary gifts to support the creation of a restorative lodging experience and are not tax-deductible charitable contributions.
