Belle Inn Is Taking Shape: A Place to Rest, Restore & Rediscover
Our Journey | Entry No. 1 | October 2026
Every meaningful journey begins somewhere.
For Belle Inn, that journey began with a simple idea: What if travel could be less about doing more and more about giving ourselves permission to slow down?
What if there were a place where rest wasn't something squeezed between activities, but an essential part of the experience? A place where guests could enjoy quiet surroundings, rediscover simple pleasures, explore at their own pace, and return home feeling genuinely restored?
That idea is gradually becoming a reality, and I'm excited to share some of our progress.
We've Found Our Place!
After considerable searching and planning, we've identified a promising home for Belle Inn in Lisbon, Iowa, a welcoming small town in the heart of eastern Iowa.
The property offers an opportunity to create the intimate, peaceful setting I've envisioned, with room for comfortable guest accommodations, creative activities, reading, reflection, and opportunities to connect with nature.

We're still working through the steps necessary to make this location our own, but finding a property that fits the vision is an exciting milestone.
And it's made the possibilities feel much more real.
Five Guest Rooms, Inspired by Nature
One of the most enjoyable parts of planning Belle Inn has been imagining the guest experience.
Our five guest rooms already have names: Prairie, Pond, Pasture, River, and Woodland.
Each draws inspiration from the natural beauty and quiet rhythms of Iowa's landscape. While every room will have its own personality, all five will share a commitment to comfort, tranquility, and restorative rest.
We're thinking carefully about lighting, sound, furnishings, textures, and the little details that can make a meaningful difference in how well someone rests.
Beyond the bedrooms, we're envisioning welcoming spaces for reading, puzzles, creativity, and quiet reflection. Guests will be encouraged to explore eastern Iowa at their own pace—or simply enjoy an afternoon without an agenda.
Because sometimes the most meaningful part of a getaway is having the freedom to do absolutely nothing.
Beyond a Comfortable Room: The Quiet Comfort Standard
At Belle Inn, we believe restorative rest involves much more than a comfortable bed and attractive surroundings.
That's why we're developing the Quiet Comfort Standard, an approach to creating environments that support rest through thoughtful consideration of lighting, sound, temperature, furnishings, and other factors that influence comfort and sleep.
Our vision extends beyond Belle Inn itself.
I've begun conversations with organizations involved in health research to explore opportunities for future studies that could help evaluate and validate the Quiet Comfort Standard.
These discussions are still preliminary, but they reflect an important part of our long-term vision: combining thoughtful hospitality practices with scientific research to better understand how our environments influence rest, restoration, and meaningful participation in everyday life.
Ultimately, I hope what we learn will benefit not only Belle Inn guests, but also people seeking to create more restorative environments in their own homes and communities.
Making Restorative Travel More Accessible
Accessibility is an important part of our vision.
Because Belle Inn's guest bedrooms are located upstairs in a historic property, providing access for guests with mobility challenges requires thoughtful planning and a significant investment.
We're developing plans to install a residential elevator that would provide lift access to four of our five guest rooms, along with improvements to the entrance and bathrooms.
We anticipate launching a crowdfunding campaign to help make these improvements possible.
For us, accessibility is about more than getting from one floor to another. It's about helping people who might otherwise find travel difficult enjoy a comfortable, welcoming place to stay.
It's also about creating possibilities for caregivers, people recovering from medical challenges, and others who may especially benefit from a peaceful change of scenery.

One of our longer-term hopes is to offer occasional respite stays for caregivers, potentially in collaboration with organizations serving the individuals and families they support.
We'll share more about the accessibility project and ways to support it as our plans develop.
Sharing the Iowa You Might Not Expect
Another exciting development is our proposed tourism marketing campaign.
We've submitted an application for an Iowa tourism marketing grant to support a creative initiative that will introduce travelers to Belle Inn and the many restorative experiences available throughout eastern Iowa.
Our campaign will highlight a side of Iowa that visitors might not immediately imagine: beautiful natural spaces, independent bookstores, small-town discoveries, arts and culture, wildlife, scenic drives, and opportunities to reconnect with the things that matter.
We're envisioning a collection of videos, stories, and thoughtfully curated visitor recommendations that invite people to discover eastern Iowa in a different way.
Rather than encouraging guests to fill every hour of their visit, we want to help them discover experiences that feel meaningful, enjoyable, and manageable at their own pace.
The grant decision is still pending, but the creative planning is already underway.
Building Connections With Our Community
Belle Inn isn't intended to be an experience contained within four walls.
We're reaching out to local businesses, nonprofit organizations, artists, and community partners whose work complements our philosophy of rest, restoration, creativity, and meaningful participation.
Some of these conversations have already been encouraging, and we're looking forward to developing relationships that benefit both our guests and the communities they'll visit.
We envision sharing thoughtfully curated recommendations and stories about places and people worth discovering, including some of eastern Iowa's lesser-known treasures.
These collaborations may take different forms, from introducing guests to unique destinations to creating opportunities for shared storytelling, visitor experiences, and community support.
Our goal isn't simply to send visitors somewhere. It's to help them find experiences that genuinely fit their interests, energy, and personal definition of a restorative getaway.
What Comes Next?
There's still plenty to do.
The coming months will bring property planning, improvements, furnishings, accessibility decisions, marketing development, and many more conversations with potential community partners.
We'll also be sharing more about the guest rooms, the creative studio, our library, outdoor spaces, and the philosophy behind Belle Inn's approach to rest and travel.
Some plans will undoubtedly evolve along the way. That's part of creating something thoughtfully, rather than rushing to open the doors.
But with each step, Belle Inn is becoming a little more real.
Thank You for Being Part of the Beginning
I hope this blog becomes more than a collection of renovation updates and announcements.
I'd like it to be a place where we can explore what it means to rest well, participate meaningfully in life, and discover the restorative possibilities that exist close to home.
Whether you're a future guest, a potential community partner, a supporter of accessible travel, or simply someone who believes we could all benefit from slowing down occasionally, I'm glad you're here.
Belle Inn is taking shape, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you.
Rest. Restore. Rediscover.
